. . . Toomey says that Werne has "a lot of energy in his music and a very positive attitude toward the audience." Masters praises Werne's smart, creative approach to songwriting and recording.
"When I went to his house to record my bass parts, he knew specifically what he was looking for," Masters said. "That's a seasoned musician, and a very informed and good musician, who can do that. He knows what he likes, and he knows what he wants it to sound like."
Logan Vath, a young songwriter in Norfolk, describes Werne's presence this way: "Karl is one of the few people I've ever met whose energy and compassion is palpable when he walks into a room. I respect and look up to him tremendously as a songwriter, but much more importantly, a fellow human being. . . "
. . . The cerebral, groove oriented instrumentation of Werne's twelve originals feature some of his favorite players including saxophonist Eddie Williams and the Dave Matthews Band's Tim Reynolds. Each song has a different lineup accompanying Werne making them stand out.
The songs are profound, thought provoking and in the end, hopeful. Especially on the new version of a song he released two years ago as a single.
He pays tribute to his father on the album's last song.
Karl Werne has had a long time to put "This Little Notebook" together and he has used his time well, stockpiling his most compelling songs and working with a cast of collaborators who bring out the best in him. . . "
. . . Talk about a great 50th birthday: Karl Werne releases an outstanding collection of introspective songs and headlines at the American Theatre. You could say it is a coming of age of sorts. Like a fine red blend of French Bordeaux, Werne seems to get better with age.
"This Little Notebook" holds 12 well written acoustic-based songs featuring a full band of rotating friends who happen to be fabulous musicians.. . . "
