Five More Minutes

Five More Minutes

Southern California, 1975
Always perfect weather, good to be alive
All the neighbors' children and a basketball
Pretending that we cannot hear my mama call

Give me five more minutes, I'll be coming home
Just five more minutes, mom, I'm in the zone
Soon enough this moment's gonna disappear
But for five more minutes, I will stay right here

Strange the things we value in this present day
They tell you save your pennies for a rainy day
While every second falls away a grain of sand
Just like every drop of water in the Rio Grande

Give me five more minutes, cause I'm dug in deep
Promises and schedules that I've gotta keep
Soon enough my ship is gonna sail right in
But for five more minutes, I am stretched too thin

How you spend your time
Will help to define
Life without regret
What's unfinished yet

Every road's a story with its forks and bends
Southside of Virginia, here a chapter ends
Family arriving from near and far
When news had spread that mama signed the DNR

Give me five more minutes, I'll be coming home
Just five more minutes, mom, you're not alone
Soon enough this moment's gonna disappear
But for five more minutes, won't you stay right here
