(Trying To Get To) Nashville

(Trying To Get To) Nashville

The "Last Chance Diner" sign stood seemingly alone
But underneath she held a cardboard version of her own
It said "I'm trying to get to Nashville,
Won't you help me if you can?"

None of the diners knew her story or her name
Unkind speculations spawned a local children's game
Their laughter stung as bitter
As the coffee in my hand
As I paid my tab I pondered
A sudden change of plan

If you asked this morning, in the evening where I'd be
The last thing I would say is on the road to Tennessee
Melancholy riding shotgun, so I sparked the radio

Suddenly a voice came out in perfect harmony
Miles before I noticed that she never sang the melody
I cannot help but wonder of this angel from the street
Or the heavy weight she carries
Like the bags around her feet

In this world when dreams are broken
Sometimes promises get spoken
Never while considering the cost
Tunnel vision leads to blindness
Randomly an act of kindness
Has the power to rebuild what was lost

Oklahoma fades away behind us out of view
Finally I must admit that I am fading too
And the last thing I remember
Is handing her my keys

In the distance morning finds an urn without a name
Ashes scatter over Music City's Walk of Fame
She returns empty handed across the Music Mile
Could it be that I'm still dreaming
Or did I see her smile?

In this world when dreams are broken
Sometimes promises get spoken
Never while considering the cost
Tunnel vision leads to blindness
Randomly an act of kindness
Has the power to reclaim what was lost
